President's Report 2009

Like any other democratic administration, my year began as a continuation of 2008. Activities and committees were continued, because, as the president, I didn’t think that the organization needed an overhaul, but simply an injection of new or different blood. I strove to be that new blood and hoped that I achieved that aim.

This report isn’t about me, or the POWA year 2009. Funny you may say, but POWA is made up of women, and so my report is about the women and how they impacted my year and the activities which the group had throughout. Personally, I never thought of myself as a leader, but as the backbone and or the driving force of any-body which I am a part of.

Annual General Meeting
Heritage Hotel Conference Room -January 30th, 2008.

There having been a motion at the meeting of January 09, 2007 that elections be postponed, the executive remained unchanged during the celebration of POWA’s 10th anniversary. The following persons continued in their respective positions:

J. Valerie Hodge – President

Anique Joseph – Vice President

Dara Foss – Secretary

Wendy Nicholas - Treasurer

D. Gisele Isaac – Assistant Secretary/Treasurer

Stacy Harris – Public Relations Officer

These were the best of times for some of us, and I daresay the worst of times for others.

As in the year past, there were celebrations, sickness and mourning among members of our POWA family.I believe the two years of my presidency have caused me to graduate to the orders of “prayer warrior” and “sick room nurse”.I will be eternally grateful for the opportunity to storm the portals of heaven with special prayers for the women of POWA, their relatives and friends. One of my “patients” can vouch for the healing qualities of my cooking and my care. She experienced first hand, that laughter is indeed the best medicine.

President’s  Report

2005 was a volatile year for POWA, stemming mainly from internal issues that members needed addressed. While we continued to form alliances and to strive to meet all expectations, it was a year of transition for us.

Immediately following the election, members voiced the need for a strategy session. Several issues were discussed, including
The need for a Constitution Review
Implementation of a mentoring program for members
A study of women’s history and POWA’s path to success
The need for Implementation of membership and disciplinary committees

President’s  Report

This year in POWA’s evolution, in many respects could be described as a dichotomous year. It was a year of unprecedented accomplishments, a year of making international connections and forming partnerships. Yet it was also a year when we heard over and over “Where is POWA?”, “What is POWA doing?” This echo is reflective of the focus of POWA for 2004.  The change in the political landscape, enabled the organization to shift direction in 2004 and focus more on personal development, on women’s empowerment and the protection of the nation’s youth.  As a result, we were able to post several significant accomplishments.
